Specialist Diagnosis for Allergies, Hay Fever and Asthma in Cologne

An untreated allergy places sustained strain on the immune system and can progress from seasonal hay fever to allergic asthma. Many of those affected try various approaches to relieve their allergy symptoms without knowing the exact trigger.

Our aim is to give you clarity through precise allergy diagnostics. Together, we identify the relevant allergens and develop a treatment plan that suits your everyday life and your medical profile.

Our Range of Services – Allergy Care

Köln Medical specialises in the treatment of allergies in children and adults. We offer comprehensive diagnostic procedures and individually tailored treatment strategies for the full spectrum of allergic conditions – from seasonal hay fever and perennial allergic rhinitis through to allergic asthma.

Moderne Diagnostik

  • Skin prick test

The skin prick test is the standard method for identifying immediate-type allergies (such as pollen, house dust mites or pet dander). Drops of allergen are applied to the forearm, and within around 15 to 20 minutes, small local skin reactions show which substances your body reacts to.

  • Molecular allergy diagnostics

In addition to skin testing, we use modern laboratory analysis to measure specific IgE antibodies in the blood. This molecular diagnostic approach is particularly valuable for distinguishing genuine allergies from cross-reactivity and for better assessing the likely success of treatment (such as desensitisation).

  • ALEX² blood test

The ALEX² blood test represents a comprehensive extension of laboratory diagnostics. With a single blood sample, we can test around 300 allergens and allergen components simultaneously – including pollen, mites, animal dander, insect venoms and foods. This comprehensive analysis provides a precise overall picture of your allergy profile, which is crucial for further treatment planning, particularly in complex cases or when skin test results are inconclusive.

  • Nasal provocation testing

In individual cases, we carry out nasal provocation tests to confirm the clinical relevance of an allergen. The allergen is applied directly to the nasal mucosa in a minimal dose, and the reaction is measured objectively.

  • Lung function and FeNO testing (asthma screening)

This screening checks whether an allergy is also affecting the lower airways. Lung function testing measures your breathing capacity, while FeNO (fractional exhaled nitric oxide) measurement objectively assesses airway inflammation. Both tests are painless and support the early diagnostic assessment of allergic asthma.

Comprehensive Treatment

  • Desensitisation (specific immunotherapy, SIT)

Specific immunotherapy (SIT) aims not only to relieve symptoms but to directly modify the sensitivity of the immune system. Through the controlled administration of allergens over an extended period, the immune system gradually develops greater tolerance to the triggers. A central aim of this treatment is to reduce allergic reactions in the long term and to lower the risk of progression to the lower airways.

  • Individual allergen avoidance counselling

Reducing contact with triggering substances (allergen avoidance) is often an important element of treatment. We support you with practical strategies for your everyday life – from advice on organising your home environment in the case of a house dust mite allergy through to tips for the pollen season. The aim is to keep the burden on your body in daily life as low as possible.

  • Acute medication therapy

In order to relieve troublesome symptoms promptly and promote your wellbeing, medicinal support may be useful. We advise you on the choice of modern antihistamines and topical preparations (for example nasal sprays or eye drops) so that you can manage your everyday life as comfortably as possible.
